The Layover Loophole

Turkish Airlines Free Hotel Stopover: 2 Free Nights in Istanbul for US Travelers (2026)

Rules on this page last verified 2026-07-09. Airlines change things; we re-check and date it.

Most stopover programs give you time. Turkish Airlines gives you time and a hotel. Connect through Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines round-trip and the airline pays for your room: a 4-star hotel in Economy, a 5-star in Business. And if your trip starts in the US, Canada, Australia or about a dozen other long-haul markets (Japan, Mexico, Chile, Singapore, South Korea and more), they add a night on top.

How it works

Book a Turkish Airlines round-trip that connects in Istanbul with at least 20 hours between flights on one leg. After ticketing, you apply for the stopover hotel through Turkish Airlines (it is not automatic and it will not offer itself). The airline assigns the hotel; you do not pick it. Award tickets qualify too, though the deepest discount fare buckets (N and R classes) are excluded.

If your layover is shorter, 6 to 24 hours, there is a different free perk: Touristanbul, a free guided city tour with transport, run from a desk in Arrivals. Seven routes with different lengths and content, refreshed as of May 2026, and the schedule requires at least 1h25 between the tour's end and your next flight. You cannot stack both perks on the same connection; it is hotel or tour.

How to book it, step by step

  1. Book a round-trip on Turkish Airlines metal, both legs on one PNR, connecting through IST.
  2. Make sure one connection is 20+ hours (build it with multi-city search if needed).
  3. After your ticket is issued, submit the stopover request to Turkish Airlines at least 72 hours before the flight.
  4. Get your hotel confirmation, land in Istanbul, sort your own visa if your nationality needs one, and check in.

What's free and what's not

Free: the hotel room. Not free: ground transport to the hotel, meals outside what the hotel includes, taxes, and your Turkish visa if applicable. Budget the transfer; assigned hotels can sit 25+ miles from the airport.
